SEED ON THE
EDGE OF THE PATH Today we hear the parable of the sower. Too often we do not understand what is going on and so we
do not receive the Word of God and it is carried away without becoming
productive. At their Low Week meeting, the bishops raised the question of Holy
Days of Obligation. So many people had been failing to attend Mass on these
special days of devotion that a few years ago the bishops decided to transfer
three important ones onto the following Sunday. As the Epiphany and Ascension
are fixed in the national psyche (as 12 days after Christmas and 40 days after
Easter) should they be celebrated on their proper days? How do we receive Holy
Days or Church teaching on abstinence generally? Any ideas to Fr. John (or
Bishop Peter if you prefer)
WEEDS I cannot help notice the proliferation of growth that
has taken place around the church. I
know some parishioners have been very good at looking after an area of the
grounds but is there anyone else who could make up a team that could remove
some of the weeds and unwanted sprouting vegetation?
NEW TRANSLATION Our present translation of the Mass contains a number of
inaccuracies and omissions. Over the next nine weeks, there will be insertions
in the newsletter explaining some of the most important changes.
THE LORD BE
WITH YOU-AND YOUR SPIRIT Our response will change when the priest or deacon greets
us with “The Lord be with you”. Now we will say “And with your spirit”. It is a
direct translation from the Latin, and brings us in line with nearly all other
languages directly translated from the Latin. That phrase is found in many
passages of scripture, especially
