WHERE
DO WE GO FROM HERE? The scandals and cover-ups have seriously
blotted the Catholic Church’s copy book. These cannot be condoned. The
suffering of children and families cannot be minimised in any way. Every human
effort must be made to atone for wrongs done. We must face the terrible fact
that the abuse of children is widespread in every part of society. To make the
church the scapegoat now would also be a cover-up. The press has done a good
deed in insisting that the church face its failures and becomes transparent.
The formation of candidates for priesthood was very deficient in criteria and
assessment. One wonders how so many paedophile’s slipped through the net for
ordination. Pope Benedict is taking a very strong line in rectifying past
failures. Some people are asking themselves how can they stay in the church
after such scandal?
Some consolations: media hype is short
lived. Next week, next year other scandals/sensations will be present; the
Catholic churches (according to surveys and our experience here at St Teresa’s)
were packed for Holy Week and Easter ceremonies; Brenden Beelan an Irish
playwright (of sorts) on being interviewed on his beliefs and opinions on
churches, replied “I am a bad Catholic, but what else is there to be?” That may
be of some help in the present climate.
S.T.Y.L.E.

AND LIVING WITH DEMENTIA St Teresa’s SVP visits people weekly in
their homes or in their care homes to be a friend and spiritual partner. To
celebrate the birthday of our founder we will hold a “Coffee Meet” after the
10.00 am Mass next Sunday (25th). Please write the date in your
diary and come and meet members of the SVP and watch a short film (5 mins +)
called “It’s still Me Lord” about dementia. Enjoy a cup of coffee and see how
your Parish Community is responding effectively and compassionately to the
needs of people with dementia. You never know you may wish to join us in our
vocation to be of service to those most in need.
