SIGNS OF HOPE  We are seeing the birth of contemplative films. The Cannes Film Festival has given second prize to a movie Carthusian Monks: ‘Into the Great Silence’. It presents the mundane and quiet life of the Monks. Large crowds of youthful audiences across Europe have watched it. Another film about Carmelite Nuns in Notting Hill: ‘No Greater Love’ was produced last year and it is attracting large audiences. The third film ‘Of Gods and men’ is based on real events that happened in North Africa in 1990. The setting is a Cistercian Monastery where eight French monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers. Then an Islamic fundamentalist group gets working in the area. Despite the fear and uncertainty the monks decide to stay. The film builds up to the inevitable tragedy of seven monks being murdered. It is an engrossing meditation on religious convictions in a violent world.

We ask ourselves why these films in an apparently post-Christian Europe are drawing appreciative audiences? Seemingly people are drawn to the tranquillity and the happiness of religious life – a sharp contrast to their own harassed and hectic lives. They may also be captivated by community life in an age of extreme individualism where so many feel isolated and lonely. I think they are drawn to Jesus, the centre of monastic life who gives meaning and purpose to reflective people. All of us are bombarded by strange, weird, unreal ideals and lifestyles that the real world portrayed in the films has a magnetism all its own.                       From reviews the films are worth seeing.
