DEATH COMES HOME to us. Parish
funerals are a powerful source of many graces.
The chief of which is that it is the leaving of this life which
matters. We are in Eastertide and the
sure knowledge of Our Lord’s resurrection from the dead can be a wonderful
comfort for us as we approach our own deaths.
Think of the words of the Hail Mary, which I hope you say each day: ‘…
pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death …’ Many of our
contemporaries are not in the least bit interested about it or of talking about
it. We can help them by thinking about
it and in due time talking about it. If
we think about life after death our thoughts will be on heaven where we hope to
be. Thinking and praying about life
after death can help us humbly and gently to talk about death. It is for each one of us to ask for the grace
to believe in life after death and to hope that Our Lord, Risen from the dead
and ascended into heaven, waits for us when our time on earth comes to an end.
