THE ASSUMPTION   In 1950, having consulted bishops, theologians and laity, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Our Lady to be dogma of the Catholic Faith. He said “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” This was made a Holy Day of Obligation (meaning that Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on that day) to be celebrated on 15th August every year. A number of years ago, the bishops of England and Wales decreed that if the 15th August fell on a Saturday or Monday, the feast would be celebrated on the Sunday. (Next year it will fall on a Wednesday) So today, we celebrate this important article of our faith, as it is a sign to us of certain hope and comfort as we make our pilgrim way through our lives on earth.

Holy, holy – LORD OF HOSTS  our current translation speaks of “Lord God of power and might.” That is true beyond doubt, but the original taken from Isaiah’s vision of heaven speaks of Lord Sabaoth – that is describing God as the Lord, of the armies of heaven, of all the heavenly forces. Now we will acclaim our “Lord God of hosts,” that is of the host of heavenly powers, the host of spirits that serve God for all that is good.

RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION (repeated for those away last week) The Instruction on the Roman Missal says that an act of reverence should be made before receiving Holy Communion. The Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales have said that all recipients of the Sacrament should make a bow of the head just before receiving the Host.

TRAIDCRAFT GOODS ON SALE next weekend (20th/21st Aug) in the clubroom.

50th INTERNATIONAL EUCHARIST CONGRESS  will be held in Dublin from 10th to 17th June 2012. Bishop Peter will lead a group from the Diocese. Participation can be for three days or all seven. The Statio Orbis Mass will be held on the last day at Croke Park (the Pope may attend)

A meeting has been arranged at Sacred Heart Parish, 148 Ashcroft Road, Luton LU2 9AY on Saturday 24th September 2011. It starts with a Holy Hour at 2.00pm to pray for the congress and is followed by a presentation in the parish hall at 3.00pm where people interested in attending can find more details.
