JESUS’
PROMISE TO THOSE WHO KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS
The Samaritans welcomed Philip’s message about Christ
because they had experience of miracles that he worked in Christ’s name. Just
as the Samaritans were then confirmed, so were twenty three of our parish on
Wednesday. Jesus (in the Gospel) promised not to leave us as orphans but to
send us the Holy Spirit of truth to be our advocate and remain with us forever.
The Spirit he promised was to give us consolation and support us, to give us
strength. Love, peace, patience and self control; enabling us
to face up to the hostility of the world. May we all make use of the
gifts God has given us.
PARISH
PASTORAL COUNCIL Last Monday we had our Parish Pastoral Council meeting
which lasted over two and a half hours. At present there are thirty two members
and I know that some members often do not come because of the unwieldy nature
of the meeting. Perhaps we should reduce to twelve members who can be elected
by parishioners. Then we could have three more efficient meetings each year and
perhaps one open parish meeting where the annual accounts would be presented
and general matters discussed. Please let me know your thoughts.
FRIDAY ABSTINENCE At the Bishops Conference it was decided that the
practise of Friday abstinence from meat should be re-established in the lives
of Catholics as a distinctive mark of Catholic identity and witness. Friday is
the day Christ died on the cross and so we are to be united in a common
celebration of Friday penance. Should it become necessary to eat meat on a
Friday, then some other abstinence or penance laid down by the Bishop’s
conference is to be observed. This is to take effect from 16th
September 2011, the anniversary of Pope Benedict’s visit.
PLEASE PRAY
FOR our twenty three young people who
were Confirmed on Wednesday, and also for the Catechists who have worked
continually for many, many months to prepare them for this very special day, a
sincere thank you to all of them.
